The 2014 Challenge
Wainwright's Lakeland Ridge Walks Books 1 – 3

Saturday 3rd May - Saturday 24th May 2014

In Fellwalking with Wainwright, published in 1984, AW declared, ‘Ridges, in general, provide the best fellwalking in Lakeland as elsewhere: they are the high-level traverses that link mountain summits without too much descent and re-ascent between them. Ridges are usually the easiest lines of progression in rough terrain; they are the natural passages along the tops, and invariably reward the walker with ever-changing distant panoramas and aerial views of ethereal beauty as lakes and bright fields edged with trees and copses come into sight far below; and, in sharp contrast, tarns nestling in dark mountain hollows are revealed as sparkling jewels in sunlight and black pools under cloud. Often there are sensational glimpses of craggy slopes plunging down into shadowy depths where streams appear as winding silver threads. The narrower the ridge, the greater the enjoyment. Ridgewalking is fellwalking at its best.’ Fellwalking with Wainwright p. 157

The 2014 Challenge celebrates Wainwright’s love of ridge walking by completing the 84 ridge walks detailed in Books 1 – 3 of the Pictorial Guides. The walks can be completed in either direction and it is up to challengers to plan their own route to the start of the ridge walk. Although Wainwright provides a ridge walk diagram, members are advised to consult a 1:25000 OS map if in doubt about the route or poor weather conditions limit visibility.

Brathay Exploration GroupThe Society will be raising funds for ourchosen beneficiary for 2014,the Brathay Exploration Group. Money raised from donations for the Challenge will be used primarily to fund ‘Taster Weekends’ of mountain adventure enabling children from disadvantaged backgrounds to experience what Alfred Wainwright described when he first beheld the view of the Lakeland mountains as, ‘a moment of magic’. The Society hopes to be able to fund a two-year programme that will benefit over 200 children who live in Cumbria.
