Even Younger!
by Mildred Ross

Reading of the great achievement of Ellen Regan completing all of the Wainwrights at 9 years and 10 months spurred our son, Jordan, into finishing a similar challenge. Jordan’s first Wainwright was Catbells when he was 4 yrs and 3 months, and he finished on Castle Crag in October this year. He was then only 9 years and 7 months!!!

Jordan at ButtermereCastle Crag was chosen as the last hill so that Jordan’s Nan and Grandpa could join us for the walk. For Jordan, the first task of the day was to climb Lonscale Fell and Skiddaw Little Man. The day started beautifully, with mist in the valleys on a wonderfully sunny, clear, peaceful, autumn day and we came down the hill as most walkers were starting to come up! After lunch we met with Nan and Grandpa and set off for Castle Crag. A glass of bubbly was enjoyed by all on the top (Appletiser for Jordan), and the necessary photos taken.

As we live outside of the area, Jordan has fitted these walks into the school holidays and he is now looking for his next challenge. As his Mum and Dad’s knees are not as young as his, we are trying to steer him away from Everest and towards the Outlying Fells (until he is a bit older anyway!).

Jordan and familyJordan’s favourite hill was Blencathra, partly because of its recognisable shape, but also because it was one of the first we see when driving into the Lakes. Castle Crag is now his favourite because of the great views – and his Nan and Grandpa came too!

The hardest bits: he has done some of the hills twice! As he is now older, we took him up Striding Edge and onto Helvellyn for his second ascent. His least favourite would be Lord’s Rake on Scafell as it was pretty steep and rocky!
