Presentation to Peter Linney, retired Secretary of The Wainwright Society
There was a special presentation to Peter Linney, retired Society Secretary at the 2013 Memorial Lecture, held at Rheged on 28th September.
Peter was the first Secretary of the Society and held the position from the inaugural meeting in 2002 until he stepped down at the Society AGM in March 2013.
A presentation had been planned for the AGM, which took place at Staveley in March, but heavy snow at the weekend prevented Peter from attending the event!
Eric Robson, Chairman and Jane King, Joint-President paid tribute to Peter’s unstinting service to the Society over the past ten years. Jane said that her mother, Betty Wainwright, was particularly appreciative of the way that Peter had guided the Society during the early years.

On behalf of the Society, Jane King presented Peter with three gifts to mark his retirement. The first was an early impression of The Far Eastern Fells, signed by Wainwright. Secondly, a first edition of Old Roads of Eastern Lakeland, signed by Betty’s daughters, Jane King and Annie Sellar and finally a framed photograph of the unveiling of the View Indicator, which was replaced on Orrest Head in 2012.
