BETTY WAINWRIGHT
Sad news. AW's widow, Betty, died on Wednesday 20th of August. She'd been ill for some time. Her family were at home with her in Burneside near Kendal.
There will be a private service on Thursday 28th and in due course The Wainwright Society and the Wainwright family plan to organise a memorial service to celebrate the life and achievements of Betty and AW in their devoted partnership. We will let Society members know details of that service to which, of course, they are invited.

ANIMAL RESCUE CUMBRIA OPEN DAY
Animal Rescue Cumbria, the charity long associated with Alfred and Betty Wainwright held an open day on Sunday 3rd August. [more]

ANNUAL MEMORIAL LECTURE 2008
The Wainwright Society is pleased to announce that this year’s memorial lecture will take place on Saturday 11th October at 6pm, when the speaker will be Derry Brabbs. [more]

NORTH WESTERN ASCENT
During the week of the 2008 Cumberland Ale Keswick Mountain Festival, the Wainwright Society raised £1800 for Cockermouth Mountain Rescue Team. [more]

THE WAINWRIGHT BUS
The work of AW has been commemorated by one of three new liveried Stagecoach Northwest buses on the 555 route from Windermere to Keswick. [more]

THE WAINWRIGHT BRIDGE
Blackburn’s £12 million Wainwright Bridge was formally opened on 27th June 2008 with local MP Jack Straw there to cut the ribbon. John Burland, Press and Publicity Officer of the Wainwright Society, was enrolled to assist. [more]

THE WAINWRIGHT ROSE
Fryers Roses are naming a rose for A.W. in his centenary year, and an amount from each sale of "THE WAINWRIGHT ROSE" will be donated to Animal Rescue Cumbria. [more]

PHOTOGRAPHIC COMPETITION
Judy Leak and Sean McMahon were winners in the annual Wainwright Photographic Competition judged by Derry Brabbs. .. [more]

Wainwright Walks Series One was last seen on BBC 2 (Scotland only) on Sunday 15 June 2008. Series 2 was last seen on BBC 2 (Wales only) on Tuesday 15 April 2008. [more]

THE FIFTH ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING

WAINWRIGHT 214 COMPLETERS REGISTER
The Society is now compiling a register of Society members who have climbed all 214 fells described in the seven volumes of A. Wainwright's "A Pictorial Guide to the Lakeland Fells". [more]
