Wainwright Photographic Competition 2008
The 2008 Photographic Competition attracted 78 entries, 3 of which were for the ‘film’ section and 75 for the ‘digital’ format.
Derry Brabbs, who once again agreed to adjudicate and select winners wrote: Gosh, what a nightmare this year’s competition has been to judge; the standard of work has been the highest thus far and I offer my congratulations and thanks to everyone who submitted entries.
Unfortunately, the proverbial writing seems to be on the wall for film users and, as there were but 3 prints this year, we will revert to a combined competition next time. Despite that small number, there still has to be a winner and I selected the wonderfully crisp image of Swirl How’s summit cairn. It truly evokes the spirit of the fells in winter and that particular cairn has always been one of my favourites.
There were numerous outstanding images in the digital section and I have never been confronted with such a long ‘short list’. However, after much agonising I have selected the stunning monochrome picture of Windermere from High Street. It simply oozes atmosphere, is beautifully composed and reminiscent of the black and white images shot by such masters of the genre as Bill Brandt and Don McCullin; two photographers whose work inspired me when I was studying at college – far too many decades ago!!
