Wainwright Photographic Competition 2012
By the end of the year the Society had 104 entries submitted by 39 members for the 2012 Photographic Competition and, this year, the standard was exceptionally high. Once again, our judge, Derry Brabbs, had some hard decisions to make:
Derrys comments are below:
‘Another year and yet another challenge for both photographers and judge alike ! Please join me in offering sincere thanks to Peter Linney, Andy Beck and Dik Stoddart for their hard work and tireless efforts to ensure that all the entries were safely gathered in, transferred to disc, printed and the results published on the Society’s web site.
The quality of this year’s entry easily surpassed its predecessors and whilst the initial edit was fairly straightforward, when I finally got to a ‘long short list’ , deciding which two of them should be the winner and runner up was an agonising decision. However, that choice has been made and my congratulations to the winners and my apologies to those who did not quite make it onto the podium this time. ‘
Derry’s comments about the winning entry:
‘The perfect composition, colour, lighting and atmosphere of this photograph makes it a worthy winner. There is no redundant space in the photograph, the collapsed wall and standing stones in the bottom right hand corner are perfectly positioned in the composition and the low angle of the sun creates vital shadows and textures across the entire scene.’
Derry’s comments about the second-place entry:
‘The Western Highland region around Ballachulish is as much about water as it is about Munros and mountains and this photographs perfectly encapsulates the pleasure of wandering by the water’s edge on one of Scotland’s calmer days! The dark, curving shoreline and dramatic cloud structure reflected on a mirror-smooth loch combine to make this a beautiful photograph.’
The Society would like to thank Frances Lincoln Publishers for generously donating prizes to the Winner and Runner-up this year. We also thank the members who submitted entries and special thanks to Derry for judging the competition.
